Abandonment

Abandonment is a parent's failure to communicate with or provide any financial assistance to his or her child over a certain period of time. Under these circumstances, a court may deem the child abandoned by that parent and order that parent's parental rights to be terminated. Abandonment is also used to describe situations in which a child is physically abandoned -- e.g., left on a doorstep, delivered to a hospital or put in a trash can. When a child is physically abandoned, he or shel will likely be placed in an orphanage and made available for adoption.
