Abatement

Abatement refers to a reduction in something. For instance, after a death of a person, abatement occurs if the deceased person did not leave sufficient property to fulfill all the bequests made in the will and meet other expenses. In such case, gifts left in the will are cut back in order to pay taxes, satisfy other debts or take care of other gifts that are given priority under law or by the will itself.

Abatement could aslo mean the legal right to remove or stop a nuisance after a reasonable period of notice has been given.
