Actus Reus

Latin for a "guilty act." The actus reus is the physical act which, in combination with a certain mental state (i.e., mens rea), such as intent or recklessness, constitutes a crime. For example, the crime of theft requires physical taking taking of the possession of somebody (the actus reus) with the intent to permanently deprive that person of the possession (the mens rea).
