Alimony

Alimony is a type of support payment that is also called "Spousal Support" or "Spousal Maintenance." Alimony is defined as monies paid from one ex-spouse to another either weekly or monthly after a judge grants a divorce. Married persons typically combine their assets and financially maintain each other during the marriage, so when the couple divorces, the spouse who contributed more during the marriage financially is typically expected to continue that support after the marriage is dissolved. When the person receiving support payments remarries, he or she is no longer entitled to receive payments because the new spouse is then "obligated" to support him or her financially. Alternatively, a judge can award a lump-sum payment in lieu of monthly payments; however, this happens in rare cases and when the person paying the support can afford to do so.
