Amicus Curiae The term amicus curiae is Latin for "friend of the court." This term is used for a person or organization which is not a party to a lawsuit but has a strong interest in the case and wants to submit its position to the court. For instance, the ACLU files materials to support a person who claims a violation of civil rights on many occassions even though ACLU is not a party to the action and the actual litigants are represented by attorneys.
