Annulment

Annulment refers to a judical procedure that dissolves a marriage and treats the dissolved marriage as if it never happened. Annulments have become rare since the advent of no-fault divorce but couples still may be obtain in most states for one of the following reasons: fraud, duress, bigamy, incest and nonage.

Traditionally, court's awarded alimony upon divorce but not annulment. Some statutes now permit spousal support awards to a spouse following an annulment. Also, under common law, annulment resulted in bastardizing any children born during the relationship. Modern statutes have modified this harsh result.
