Answer

After a complain is filed against a person/entity (defendant), "answer" is that defendant's written response to the complaint. In general, defendant denies all or some of the allegations asserted in the complaint in the answer and can even allege allegations against the plaintiff and raise claims against the plaintiff through counterclaims. There is a deadline by which a defendant must file answer. In California state courts, for instance, defendant must file answer 30 days from the date of being served. It is general practice to request an extension of time from plaintiff's counsel to file answer. Make sure such extensions are confirmed in writing. Failure to file a timely answer may lead to a default judgment entered against the defendant.
