Arraignment Arraignment is a term used to refer to a court appearance during which a criminal defendant is formally charged with a crime and the judge asks the defendant whether he is pleading guilty, not guilty or nolo contendere. There are other matters that are handled at the arraingment as well. For instance, the court may appoint a lawyer to represent the defendant set the amount of bail.
